I’m the founder, artist and teacher behind Studio Lucerne.
I’m also a graphic designer with more than 20 years of professional experience, a mother of two boys, and someone who has rediscovered just how important creativity can be - not only as a skill, but as a way to explore, connect, express yourself and simply enjoy making something with your hands.
My story
my creative journey began with design
I trained in the UK, including postgraduate study at the prestigious London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Along the way, I studied design theory and developed a strong foundation in art and design.
For over 2 decades, I have worked professionally as a graphic designer. Creativity was my career, but somehow, somewhere along the way, I had lost sight of creativity as something to simply enjoy.
I never considered myself particularly good at art. At art school, there was always someone who seemed to be the obvious artist - the person who could draw effortlessly or create something extraordinary. I wasn't that person, so it never really occurred to me that art might be my true calling.
Then I moved to Lucerne. I found myself living in a huge apartment with lots of empty wall space and, on a whim, decided to paint after many years. That simple decision opened something back up in me.
After years of studying design and being immersed in my career, I rediscovered how much I loved making things simply because I could. Painting, experimenting, playing with colour and getting my hands messy reminded me that creativity doesn't always need a purpose.
Sometimes, it just needs space. Bringing a space for others to do the same, is what Studio Lucerne is all about.
Designer to artist - and teacher
My world changed in another wonderful way when I became a mum to two boys. They both inherited my love of all things creative and parenting them opened the door to a whole new side to art. We explore, experiment, make things, learn techniques, play and - most importantly - have fun. I discovered how much I loved nurturing creativity in children: not just teaching them how to create something, but encouraging them to think, explore, make decisions and develop confidence in their own ideas.
Professionally, I had spent more than a decade training adults in creative design. But teaching creativity outside the context of business is far more meaningful.
My professional design experience has given me a deep understanding of colour, composition, visual communication and creative process. But while that experience informs the way I teach, Studio Lucerne comes from something much more personal: my love of art, my experience as a mother, and my belief in the value of giving children and adults the opportunity and skills to explore being creative.
